A large Helo table lamp with a very large shade and decorative brass rim – a timeless classic from the 1950s, designed by Henry and Lothar Gerhard. Stylistically, the lamp's design is inspired by the Bauhaus era. The lampshade is versatile and adjustable via a ball joint. The solid lamp is made entirely of metal and painted black, with the interior of the shade painted creamy white. The design lends the lamp an elegant serenity. The domed shade provides bright, pleasantly glare-free light and is very sturdily constructed. The round, curved base with a switch is coordinated with the shade: brass strips around the rim, a dark black interior, and a slightly curved brass knob in the center for releasing the base. The shade rotates on a ball joint and does not need to be locked; it stays in any position. The ball joint has two screws for tightening or loosening the joint. The lamp was available in several sizes; the largest version offered here has a 41 cm shade – extremely rare. The lamp is in exceptionally good condition – the paint and brass parts show only minor signs of age – see photos. A very rare mid-century collector's item!

Background information on the manufacturer Helo Lighting: Helo was founded in the 1930s by Henry Gerhard Senior as the electrical goods store Helo in Breslau, then a German city. Today it is a Polish city called Wrocław. In 1945, he fled with his family to Neuburg, with only a flashlight and a few pictures. The three shops were destroyed in a bombing raid. The company Helo Lighting was re-registered in Neuburg (Neuburg an der Donau) in 1946 after the Second World War. Helo is derived from Henry and his son Lothar. Using old war materials such as brass and aluminum from the airfield, he began producing work lights, what we would now call industrial lighting. The company grew rapidly and moved twice within a few years to its current location. The company Gebr. Kaiser & Co. Leuchten KG, a lighting technology specialist factory from Neheim-Hüsten, acquired the rights to use the Helo brand and individual models, such as the "Commissaire" lamp, the 6631 Luxus. Today (2020), it is manufactured by Fritz Hansen. Lothar Gerhard, who took over the company after Henry Gerhard's death in 1964, was forced to gradually abandon the factory and transform the company into the trading company it is today. Helo now belongs to Henry Gerhard Junior, his son, and has been a member of the Expert Group since 1980.
