Antique Thonet Bentwood Chair No. 14, c. 1900
Antique bentwood chair, around 1900. Company Thonet - Vienna, model No. 14 - Design Michael Thonet. There are two manufacturer's certificates on the chair: paper label and stamp.
This chair was the company's best seller for decades and was often copied. This model comes from Vienna after 1881.
The chair is made of beech wood, screwed and equipped with a bentwood ring for stabilization. The backrest is also connected to the seat for stabilization on the side with two curved round woods. These stabilizations could be booked optionally at the time of purchase. This means that the chair no. 14 is available with and without these two woods. The seat is made of curved plywood with embossed ornament. The seat shows slight signs of aging - see photos. The chair is of high quality and in good condition: The bent wood parts (from one piece curved backrest, backrest insert, lateral stabilizations and ring) as well as the screws of the back and the front legs are in impeccable condition. The surface is stained in walnut and painted with shellac. Good original condition.
